Screensavers
Screensaver: A blank screen, picture or animation that is displayed on a
computer screen during moments of user inactivity.
Where does the term screensaver come from?
The term screensaver stems from the use of the cathode ray
tube (CRT) as a display device for computers. The CRT was often used to display the image
provided by security cameras,
ATMs, airport timetables etc. The unchanging image could result in bright
parts of the image being permanently burnt into the phosphorus coating of the display.
New technology has made the screensaver almost redundant. Plasma displays
do suffer slightly with burn-in, but this not a real problem. LCD screens suffer from a
slight image persistance which may last a few hours, but permanent image burn-in does not
usually occur.
